The Patient Care Technician program will prepare you for an entry-level position as a Patient Care Technician. Emphasis is on technical skills necessary to perform personal care to complex patients, implementation of selected portions of care plan including respiratory services, rehabilitation services, EKG, and phlebotomy under the supervision of registered nurses. Upon successful completion of this course, students will receive a certificate of completion and will be eligible for National Certification through the American Education Certification Association (AECA) to challenge the Patient Care Technician / Assistant Certification, EKG Technician Certification, Phlebotomy Technician Certification, Restorative Care Assistant Certification and CPR & First Aide Certification.

Objectives:

Complete performance objectives for each course include conditions, student behaviors, and standards. When students have successfully completed the Patient Care Technician program, they should be able to:

1. Demonstrate proficiency in all areas of Patient Care related to the competency skills required to perform patient care appropriately, safely and within accepted scope of practice, EKG related to the competency skills required for accurately and appropriately performing EKG procedures and Phlebotomy related to pre-analytical processes of laboratory testing, recognizing and adhering to infection control and safety policies and procedures.

2. Demonstrate the theoretical knowledge needed to assure the quality of Patient Care, EKG & Phlebotomy processes through appropriate quality control methods, thus contributing to the accuracy of patient care skills, ekg’s and laboratory test results respectively.

3. Exhibit the professional attitudes and behaviors that are necessary for gaining and maintaining the confidence of the health care community.

4. Meet requirements to take a national certifying examination for Patient Care Technician, EKG Technician and Phlebotomy Technician.
