Course Description:

The security, completeness and accuracy of patient data are critical. In the healthcare industry, Electronic Health Records Specialists serve an important role, which is why most employers require a certification. The CEHRS is a nationally-recognized credential that can set you apart.

 
As an Electronic Health Records Specialist, you may perform some or all of the following tasks:
  • Audit patient records for compliance
  • Abstract clinical information for reports
  • Perform basic coding to submit reimbursement claims
  • Process Release of Information (ROI) requests for medical records
  • Review patient records to ensure completion and accuracy
  • Collect patient demographic and insurance information
  • Discuss patient information with physicians and insurance professionals

Electronic Health Records Specialists are in high demand in hospitals, physicians’ offices, nursing homes and even government facilities.

Course Outline: Certified Electronic Health Record Specialist (CEHRS)

Lesson 01: Software Applications and Equipment

Class 01: Application Operation
  • Manage backup of EHR data (e.g., restore patient data)
  • Execute EHR work flows within a healthcare facility (e.g., clinical and administrative protocols).
  • Retrieve patient information from the EHR database.
  • Store patient information in the EHR database.
  • Acquire external patient data.
  • Edit EHR with proper privileges.
  • Perform routine EHR clinical and/or administrative tasks within a healthcare facility per facility protocols.
  • Transmit patient data for external use (e.g., insurance, pharmacies, other providers).
  • Execute software updates.
  • Maintain inventory of software and hardware assets.
  • Operate integrated devices with EHR software (e.g., scanners, fax machine, signature pads, cameras).
  • Access clinical vocabularies in a health information system when appropriate.
Class 02: Practice Management
  • Maintain a provider database for the purpose of continuity of care
  • Develop clinical templates for data capture (e.g., by diagnosis, by procedure, by practice).
  • Coordinate patient flow within the office (e.g., scheduling, patient registration and verification, patient referrals).
  • Provide ongoing end--user training of EHR software
  • Provide end--user technical support of EHR software.
  • Edit existing searchable databases (e.g., code changes, patient demographics, insurance carriers).
  • Identify inconsistencies between patient information and practice management software.
 

Lesson 02: Insurance and Billing

Class 05: Generate patient statements.
 
Class 06: Post payments to patient accounts at the time of visit.
 
Class 07: Generate encounter forms/super bills.
 
Class 08: Generate face/admission sheets.
 
Class 09: Find codes in the ICD, CPT, and HCPCS manuals.
 
 

Lesson 03: Charting

Class 01: Monitor the provider documentation for completeness and accuracy.
 
Class 02: Categorize patient’s health information into a reliable and organized system that promotes error identification.
 
Class 03: Enter live data into an EHR.
 
Class 04: Assist clinicians with charting.
 
Class 05: Locate requested information in a patient chart.
 
Class 06: Execute file maintenance procedures (e.g., purging, archiving, finalizing, securing).
 
Class 07: Audit charts to ensure compliance of proper charting.
 
 
Class 08: Document the link between effective charting and reimbursement for procedures performed by clinicians.
 

Lesson 04: Regulatory Compliance

Class 01: Adhere to professional standards of care as they pertain to medical records.
 
Class 02: Maintain confidentiality of Protected Health Information (PHI) in compliance with HIPAA Privacy Rule and facility policy.
 
Class 03: Maintain security of Protected Health Information (PHI) in compliance with HIPAA Security Rule and facility policy.
 
Class 04: Detect threats to the security of electronic information
 
Class 05: Reconcile threats to the security of electronic information
 
Class 06: Audit compliance and report to proper enforcement officer.
 
Class 07: Release Protected Health Information (PHI) in accordance with HIPAA and facility policy.
 
Class 08: Participate in internal audits of medical records (e.g., consent forms, Release of Information forms (ROI), signature on file).
 
Class 09: Comply with patient safety standards regarding abbreviations in a health information system.
 
Class 10: Execute a plan for data recovery in the case of a catastrophic event.
 
Class 11: De-­‐identify Protected Health Information (PHI) when directed.
 

Lesson 05: Reporting

Class 01: Generate statistical reports for clinical Quality Improvement (QI) measures
 
Class 02: Compile medical care and census data for continuity of care records (e.g., statistical reports on diseases treated, surgery performed, use of hospital beds for clinical audits).
 
Class 03: Generate statistical reports for financial Quality Improvement (QI) measures.
 
Class 04: Generate aging reports by guarantor or carrier.
 
Class 05: Generate financial analysis reports by provider, diagnosis, or procedure.

CEHRS Certification Exam Details:

100 questions, 10 pretest questions

Exam time: 1 hour, 50 minutes

GETTING YOUR RESULTS

NHA will officially post your certificate results to your account page within two days of taking the test, and your printed certificate will arrive within two weeks.
